🏊 Pool Care

How often should I test my pool water?

We recommend testing your pool water at least 2–3 times per week during swimming season. Regular testing helps you catch imbalances early before they become bigger (and more expensive) problems.

What should my pool chemical levels be?

Here are the ideal ranges to aim for:

  • Free Chlorine: 1.0 – 3.0 ppm
  • pH: 7.2 – 7.6
  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): 30 – 50 ppm

Why is my pool water green?

Green water is almost always caused by algae growth, which typically happens when chlorine levels drop too low. Shock your pool with a high-dose chlorine treatment, brush the walls and floor, and run your filter continuously until the water clears. Our PoolBoss Pool Shock is perfect for this.

How do I open my pool for the season?

Opening your pool properly sets you up for a great summer. Key steps include removing and cleaning your cover, reconnecting equipment, testing and balancing your water chemistry, and shocking the pool. Check out our Pool Opening Checklist for a full step-by-step guide.

How do I close my pool for winter?

Proper winterization protects your pool and equipment from freeze damage. You'll need to balance your water, add winterizing chemicals, lower the water level, blow out the lines, and cover the pool securely. See our Pool Closing Checklist for details.

How much shock do I need for my pool?

As a general rule, use 1 lb of pool shock per 10,000 gallons of water for regular shocking. For algae treatment or opening after winter, you may need 2–3x that amount. Always shock at dusk or night for best results.

🛁 Spa & Hot Tub Care

How often should I test my spa water?

Spa water should be tested 2–3 times per week. Because spas hold much less water than pools and operate at higher temperatures, chemical levels can shift quickly.

What are the ideal spa water chemistry levels?

  • Bromine: 3.0 – 5.0 ppm (or Chlorine: 1.0 – 3.0 ppm)
  • pH: 7.2 – 7.8
  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 150 – 250 ppm

How often should I drain and refill my hot tub?

We recommend draining and refilling your spa every 3–4 months, depending on usage. Heavy use may require more frequent changes. Before refilling, clean the shell and flush the lines with a product like SpaBoss Whirlpool Rinse.

Why is my spa water cloudy?

Cloudy spa water is usually caused by high bather load, low sanitizer levels, high pH, or a dirty filter. Start by testing your water, shocking with SpaBoss Spa-Shock, and cleaning or replacing your filter cartridge.

What's the difference between bromine and chlorine for spas?

Both sanitize effectively, but bromine is generally preferred for spas because it works better at higher temperatures, is gentler on skin, and doesn't produce as strong an odour. SpaBoss offers excellent bromine-based products including Brom-Aid and Bromine Tabs.

How do I get rid of foam in my hot tub?

Foam is usually caused by soaps, lotions, or low calcium hardness. Shower before using your spa, and use SpaBoss Defoamer for a quick fix. If foam persists, it may be time for a water change.
